Karimunjawa Island is the largest in a group of 27 islands north of Semarang Indonesia. It is known for its snorkeling and diving tho when we were there is was raining and we didn't get much snorkeling in. It is large enough to explore by motorbike which can be rented at a daily rate of Rp 75,000. There are many homestays on the island in the Rp 70,000 per night price range. Room with shared Indonesian bathroom. Plus a few more upscale places.
People are very friendly and helpful.
They are determined not to become the next Bali! Plan to keep prices reasonable and not to over-develop the area, so they say.
There is one large warung, Warung Ibu Ester, for all meals and many small stands where you can eat dinner.
There is a not-yet-opened gorgeous boutique hotel opening soon that will provide breakfast and dinner.
The island is clearly in the early development stages of having more tourists.
You must take the ferry or fast boat from Semarang or Jepara.
